Bala is an acclaimed senior artist, choreographer and professor of Practice in Indian Classical dance - Bharata Nrityam.
Trained under eminent Gurus the noted Bharata Nrityam exponent Dr.Padma Subrahmanyam and Mrs.Jayalakshmi Narayanan, Bala works on developing and perfecting the style that would be seamless and fluid while yet retaining the precision, power & purity of line - typical of classical dance. Bala had the unique opportunity to learn the angas, charis nrittahastas, sthanas which go to form the 108 Karanas. The Karanas are governed by artistic laws of permanent value of Natya Sastra, which is the specialty of her Guru Dr.Padma Subrahmanyam - whose scholarly thesis on Karanas remains an inspiration to exponents in this field. Bala teaches a revived dance technique translating theoretical concepts into practice based on her Guru Dr.Padma Subrahmanyam’s research and teaching. Bala focuses on creating and consolidating awareness about the link that the ancient heritage has through classical style of dance, by imparting valuable training to motivated students of Classical dance. In this scientific approach she models herself on the principles of her Guru the noted Bharata Nrityam exponent Dr.Padma Subrahmanyam.

Bala has been a consistent performer for varied audiences, making a significant mark on the concert platform. Bala is a panel artist with the New Jersey state council on the Arts. More recently she delivered a Master class and performance of Bharatha Nrityam at Mount Holyoke College sponsored by Dept. of Asian Studies in connection with the course on classical Indian literature and aesthetics. Translation of traditional dance form and the literary, scientific and aesthetic world in which classical styles are embedded. She is a panel artist with the New Jersey state council on the Arts. She is also an active participant in some of the prestigious dance seminars and workshops. She is involved in developing “Performing studies” in collaboration with Theater and Dance, History, Philosophy, Linguistic anthropology and Music departments of various Universities in the United States. In addition to her Artistic endeavors, Bala is an independent Management Consultant. She lives in Princeton with her husband and two sons.
